Following I will list my favorite Allure flooring video clips on YouTube. These DIY videos teach you how to install Allure flooring the easy way and review the successful and disappointing installs of Allure flooring.
1. INSTALLATION: DIY Allure Flooring Video
This is my favorite Allure installation video – it’s very helpful, with clear instructions and plenty of great tips. The homeowner installed the Trafficmaster Allure floating vinyl tiles in their kitchen without any subfloor preparation, right over their old vinyl floor. They used: a carpet knife, snips, ruler, and a couple of other common tools. I like how the video explains which side of the plank to cut in each case, working with corners, working around kitchen appliances, and adjoining the planks the right way. The homeowner also explains why they chose Allure flooring over laminate.
I would just like to add that it’s good to heat up the adhesive strips using a hair dryer – this helps them to glue to each other better and prevents them from lifting up due to dampness. For the same reason, it’s good to roll the floor with a heavy roller right after the installation, especially if the area is prone to dampness.
A few months later, the owner comments that they are still happy with their floor and how it’s holding up. They also address the odor question: they only noticed it while installing Allure. The cost of materials for their kitchen was under $300.
2. INSTALLATION: How to Install Allure Floor
This is another excellent Allure flooring video that covers installation. It’s my second favorite because the installer is a professional rather than amateur. The video explains how to adjoin the planks and why it’s important to connect them right from the start. A great feature of this video is that it explains why you shouldn’t line up the planks and shows how to stagger them in a little step pattern. This way, the floor will retain its strength and look like real wood. The reviewer states that the product looks exactly like real wood and that if they didn’t know they could never tell.
This video also explains why Allure can be better than laminate, since it is extremely moisture-proof. Also, Allure saves money because there’s no padding needed, while laminate floor installs need padding that runs from $1-$3 per square foot.
3. INSTALLATION: Allure Flooring
This video is much less detailed, but it provides additional insight into installing the free floating Allure floors. You will see how easy it is to install vinyl planks with glue strips in square/rectangular rooms. There are no nooks or crannies, so it’s a breeze to put in these types of products. The only tool the homeowner used was a utility knife!
The size of the room was about 105 square feet and they purchased the flooring for $230 (5 boxes). The homeowner liked the feel and the look, but they had two issues with the product: there was almost a whole box of useless scrap flooring left over and there was the vinyl smell. At 3 month follow up, they warn that the smell never dissipated. One of the commenters argues that they had zero smell and little waste thanks to good planning, while a few other commenters agree that smell is an issue.
4. CUTTING TIP: Allure Easy Snap Off
This short video clip shows an easy way to cut and snap Allure. Make the measurements, make an incision on each side of the plank using a Xacto knife or utility knife, and score it once. Push the plank out and it snaps. Push it the other way and it breaks off with a straight edge.
5. WARNING: Allure Flooring Job Botched By Installers
The homeowner had their new floor installed by HDs subcontractors and the job was botched. The video shows gaps in the seams all over the place. Who’s to blame? The homeowner and the floor manufacturer blame the installers for not getting the seams tight. The installers blame the floor manufacturer… My advice is to make sure that you get every seam VERY tight, heat up each seam with a hair dryer and roll each seam to make them stay put! Also, make sure to adhere to all the rest of the instructions that you will find in the installation manual, including letting the boxes acclimate and installing within the recommended temperature parameters.
